Midnight Oil (known informally as "The Oils") were an Australian rock band formed in Sydney in 1972. The band was composed of four founding members Peter Garrett (vocals, harmonica), Jim Moginie (guitar, keyboard) and Martin Rotsey (guitar) and Rob Hirst (drums and vocals); as well as bass players Andrew James (1972 - 1980) Peter Gifford (1980-1987) and Bones Hillman (1987-2020).
