About

The Pasadenas were an English R&B and pop group. They achieved two top 10 albums and eight top 40 singles in the United Kingdom, including "Tribute (Right On)" (1988), "Riding on a Train" (1988) and "I'm Doing Fine Now" (1992). The group's debut single, "Tribute (Right On)", was released in 1988 and reached number five in the UK Singles Chart. It also topped the charts in the Netherlands. The song paid tribute to soul artists including Diana Ross & the Supremes and Aretha Franklin. Their second single, "Riding on a Train", reached number 13 in the UK. Both songs appeared on their debut album, "To Whom It May Concern", released in October 1988. The album reached number three in the United Kingdom and sold more than one million copies. Other singles from the album included "Enchanted Lady", which reached the UK top 40, and a cover version of the Chi-Lites' "Living in the Footsteps of Another Man". In 1989, the Pasadenas participated in Band Aid II's recording of "Do They Know It's Christmas", alongside Cliff Richard, Jimmy Somerville, Chris Rea and other artists associated with Stock Aitken Waterman. In 1990, the group adopted a different musical style and released "Love Thing", which reached number 22 in the United Kingdom and number 13 in the Netherlands. A second single, "Reeling", entered the UK top 75 in July 1990. Following the commercial performance of these singles, the release of their second album, "Elevate", was delayed until 1991 and was issued only in selected territories. As "Elevate" did not chart, the group recorded the covers album "Yours Sincerely", released in 1992. Their version of New York City's 1973 song "I'm Doing Fine Now", produced by Ian Levine and Billy Griffin, became their highest-charting UK single, reaching number four and selling more than 200,000 copies. Three additional singles from "Yours Sincerely" reached the UK top 75. Their final UK top 40 hit was a cover of Al Green's "Let's Stay Together", which reached number 22 in November 1992. Following the release of "Yours Sincerely", the group left Columbia/Sony Music and subsequently issued recordings independently. In 1994, they released "Longing For Someone" on the Sounds of London label. In 1995, "Round & Round" reached number 96 in the UK chart and became their final appearance in the Official Charts database. In 2002, Cherry Red Records reissued "To Whom It May Concern" on CD. In April 2005, the Pasadenas appeared in the third week of the television programme "Hit Me, Baby, One More Time". In 2021, various members of the group appeared on Channel 5's retrospective music programmes, including "Britain's Favourite 80s Songs". Group member Andrew Banfield's sister, Susan Banfield, was one half of the Cookie Crew.
