Winona Ryder has been announced as joining the cast of Wednesday season three, continuing her relationship with Netflix after starring in the final season of Stranger Things.
According to an article by The Hollywood Reporter, she will join the latest series of the Addams Family spin-off as a guest star, although so far her role remains a secret. “I am so happy that Winona has joined us, she fits right into this world,” series director Tim Burton said in a statement. “And she’s a dear friend. I always feel lucky to work with her.”
This marks the fifth time Ryder had worked with Burton, with the pair first collaborating on Beetlejuice in 1988, then two years later on the cult classic Edward Scissorhands. She would be part of the voice cast on animated feature Frankenweenie, before the pair would reunite in 2024 for sequel Beetlejuice Beetlejuice, also starring Wednesday’sJenna Ortega. She was introduced to a new generation as Joyce Byers in the global smash hit Stranger Things, which had its controversial final season released in December.
Creators and showrunners Al Gough and Miles Millar also said in the statement: “When it comes to Outcasts, Winona Ryder is the GOAT. Her legendary partnership with Tim Burton has defined some of cinema’s most unforgettable characters. We loved collaborating with her on Beetlejuice Beetlejuice and couldn’t be more thrilled to welcome her to Nevermore.”
Ryder joins fellow new addition Eva Green, who was recently announced as playing Morticia Addams’ (Catherine Zeta Jones) sister Ophelia. Wednesday season one remains the most watched English language show of all time on Netflix, with over 252million views, while season two is fifth in that list with over 119million views.
Late last year, star Fred Armisen confirmed there is a spin-off for his character, Uncle Fester, in the works.
