God Of War creator David Jaffe has slated the first-look image of Amazon Prime Video’s upcoming live-action adaptation: “It is so bad in so many ways.”
Jaffe directed the hit PlayStation game Twisted Metal and its 1995 sequel before leading work on God Of War and God Of War 2. He left Sony in 2007 to start his own game studio but the God Of War series continued without him.
Over the weekend, Amazon Prime Video shared the first official look of their upcoming God Of War adaptation. The image sees Kratos (Ryan Hurst) hunting with his young son Atreus (Callum Vinson), but the picture has been heavily criticised online with fans concerned about Hurst’s physique and how young Vinson looks.
Responding to the backlash, Hurst took to Instagram and wrote, “Don’t believe everything you see on the Internet, kids,” despite the image being shared by the official Prime Video account.

In his new video ‘God Of War Creator Reacts To TV Show Image’, Jaffe said the photo looked like Kratos was “shitting in the woods” while Atreus “looks like he’s a very confused little boy with way too much product in his hair.”
“Neither of these characters look very interesting or appealing. They look just dumb. If this was God Of War: Dumb And Dumber Edition, that’s what you would expect. It [looks like] a comedy,” he continued. “If you are going to reveal to most people a brand new character that you hope is going to carry your series for the first time and this is the way you introduce them… it’s just stupid.”
After more criticisms, Jaffe went on to say he’s not worried about the adaptation because showrunner Ron Moore is “a juggernaut of a talented fellow” while God Of War creative director Cory Barlog is “great with storytelling”.
“I think it’ll be great for people who like this kind of thing. I’m honestly just more confused [about why they released that image],” he added.
The Amazon Prime Video adaptation of God Of War is inspired by the 2018 reboot game and its 2022 sequel God Of War Ragnarök.
Last year it was reported a new God Of War game was in development and would take place in Ancient Egypt while yesterday (March 2), it was claimed a prequel spin-off starring Kratos’ wife Faye was also in the works.
Last month, it was announced that the first three God Of War games were being remastered while side-scrolling prequel adventure Sons Of Sparta was released without warning. “It’s not a bad game by any means, it’s fine. I could go into the specifics of the game but the most fascinating part of this for me is ‘why is this in existence?’,” asked Jaffe in a nine-minute rant about the game. “The voice acting isn’t very good, and the story… maybe it gets really good [but] this is not God Of War.”
