Kit Harington has said he is open to revisiting the shelved Jon Snow spinoff from Game Of Thrones, as he now feels “more comfortable” with the character again.
He played Snow through all eight seasons of the HBO series, before development began on a sequel following the character after the events of the 2019 finale.
Speaking on the Happy Sad Confused podcast, Harington reflected on the project, which was ultimately abandoned, and suggested that enough time had now passed for him to consider another attempt.
“We developed it two years or so,” he said. “I still think there’s a world in which something could work. I wouldn’t have gone into it in the first place if I didn’t.”
Harington said that he, HBO and George R.R. Martin had agreed from the beginning that the project should only go ahead if they found a story worthy of continuing Jon’s arc.
“I was very insistent at the start — as was HBO and George R.R. Martin — of like: ‘If we don’t find the right thing, let’s not do it. It’s much better if we don’t.’”
He added that he eventually became the driving force behind the decision to put the series aside.
“After a little while of thinking about it — it kind of was me — [I said], ‘This isn’t quite the right [story].’”
He added: “Now I’ve gone and done all these other things and now I feel more comfortable with that character and that world again and where it sits in my life.”
The comments mark a change of tone from Harington’s position as recently as last December, when he said he was “done” with playing Jon and did not want to “go anywhere near” Game Of Thrones.
When Harington first confirmed in 2024 that the proposed Jon Snow series had been shelved, he explained that the team had been unable to find “the right story to tell that we were all excited about enough”.
The project would have picked up after the conclusion of Game Of Thrones, which saw Jon kill Daenerys Targaryen before being exiled to the Night’s Watch and eventually travelling north of the Wall with the Free Folk.
Last month, Harington was confirmed to be replacing Nicholas Hoult as Gilderoy Lockhart in the second season of the new Harry Potter series, and the actor is currently appearing in the four-part MGM+ adaptation of Charles Dickens’ A Tale Of Two Cities, which premiered earlier this month.
Meanwhile, the wider Game Of Thrones universe continues to expand. House Of The Dragonwill conclude with its fourth and final season in 2028, while A Knight Of The Seven Kingdoms has already been renewed for a second season.
A feature film titled Aegon’s Conquest was also confirmed earlier this year, telling the story of Aegon I Targaryen’s conquest and unification of Westeros centuries before the events of the original series.
