Melissa Barrera has revealed that she would be willing to return to the Scream franchise under one condition.
The actress was fired from the horror series’ seventh film in November 2023 after she criticised the Israeli government’s actions in Gaza, while fellow star Jenna Ortega and director Christopher Landon subsequently dropped out of the film.
Speaking to JustWatch, Barrera shared that she would come back if the rights were moved from company Spyglass Media Group, who she claimed had not apologised after accusing her of antisemitism.
“Not with the company that currently holds the rights,” she said. “I love the franchise. I had an amazing time making those movies.
“But a lot of the hate and the difficulty that I’ve faced in the last years is because the leadership of that company made it a point to label me something that I’m not, and they never apologized, even when I was proven right.
“Even with an apology, I wouldn’t go back to work with them. So, not that I’m holding my breath. I don’t think they have that ability. But if the franchise were ever to leave those hands and go into hands that I think honor Wes Craven’s legacy more, I think yeah,” Barrera added.
Elsewhere, the actress recently shared support for Macklemore after the rapper was dropped from Ed Sheeran’s ‘Loop’ tour for making pro-Palestine comments, questioning why she didn’t get the support he received when she was fired.
“It made me emotional. You know, I didn’t get that when it happened to me. I didn’t have any of that happen. It was too soon. People were too scared. But it’s good to see that almost three years later, at least things have changed.
“When someone is attacked, and there are people behind being like, ‘We’re not gonna allow this,’ and the more that happens, the less that the people in power are going to try to censor it because eventually it’s not gonna work.”
She then questioned what would have happened if Sheeran “called the bluff”, suggesting people “would have rallied behind him”.
“I wish that the people that have power understood the power that they have. I think that the problem is that there’s a lot of people that actually have a lot of power.
“They think they don’t, and they’re operating out of fear, and it’s just a shame because, you know, we just saw what happened—the support that rallied behind Macklemore—and I think that’s a big step. I think that what we’re seeing, what we’re witnessing, is going to inspire real change, and I’m very hopeful about that.”
Meanwhile, Matthew Lillard recently expressed regret about appearing in Scream 7 after Barrera’s firing, admitting he felt “ashamed” and “embarrassed”.
