The Swedish Royal Opera has also named the new space as its temporary home for the next five years The post Stockholm’s new venue Gasometer to open with performances Jacob Mühlrad & Alexander Wessely appeared first on NME.

Gasometer, the new venue arriving in Sweden next year, has announced the first names on its line-up, with Jacob Mühlrad & Alexander Wessely set to open the space.

The new space is due to open its doors on March 17 next year, and will be a new 2,300-capacity venue in Stockholm. It gets its name as it is a conversion of a gasholder built in 1899, and it is set to be operated by hospitality and entertainment company Miramis.

Programming for Gasometer will be run by the company’s head of entertainment Julien Planté – formerly of KOKO in London – and it will play host to live gigs and the Swedish Royal Opera. The latter of which has confirmed that it will be hosting events there as its home venue for the next five years.

Now, ahead of the opening next spring, it has been confirmed that composer Jacob Mühlrad and visual artist and creative director Alexander Wessely will be the first to host events there when it opens its doors.

They have gigs lined up for between March 17 and March 20, and the slot at the venue comes following Mühlrad being commissioned by the BBC Proms and Radio France, and also writing the music for the 2025 Nobel Prize Banquet. His music has also been performed at the Royal Albert Hall and Stockholm Concert Hall over the years, and he also has collaborated with artists outside of the classical music genre, including Swedish House Mafia and 070 Shake.

For Wessely, the partnership with Mühlrad comes following him becoming established as an acclaimed designer – creating visual art for The Weeknd, Rihanna, FKA twigs and Arca, and having his work displayed at Coachella, Madison Square Garden, the Las Vegas Sphere and more.

The new venue in Stockholm is expected to bring together architecture, live entertainment and state-of-the-art audio and visual technology for its events.

“With the inauguration of the Gasometer, we are not simply opening a new venue; we are establishing a new benchmark for live entertainment in Europe,” Planté said (as per IQ). “In bringing Jacob Mühlrad and Alexander Wessely together, we are signalling our intent from day one: this is a space where architectural heritage meets boundary-pushing artistic innovation. We are proud to offer a stage where world-class creators can realise their most ambitious visions.”

As for the space itself, it comes as Ferdinand Boberg’s protected brick gasholder has been converted with an entirely new pillar-free theatre built inside it. It also has a 1,000 capacity Dome space under the roof, and with a standing arrangement it can welcome 2,300 guests, and with the seated theatre format, it will fit 1,750 visitors.
