Charities have broadly welcomed the government’s announcement that disabled people in England will be able to travel by bus for free 24/7 from next April, but say more work needs to be done to ensure barriers are removed across other areas aside transport.
“Today’s announcement that bus travel will be free for disabled people is hugely welcome. It will directly remove a significant financial barrier that prevents many disabled people from getting around, connecting with others and taking part in their communities,” Mark Gale, policy manager at the national disability charity Sense, said.
Huge sums of money are being taken out of our railway in profits and dividends by private rolling stock companies. A lot of it ends up in offshore tax havens. We need to keep that money on the track, not send it offshore.
