‘The Simpsons’ creator gives update on future of ‘Hit & Run’ game

The 'GTA'-esque game has become a cult classic since its release in 2003 The post ‘The Simpsons’ creator gives update on future of ‘Hit & Run’ game appeared first on NME.

The Simpsons: Hit & Run is “coming back in some form”, according to the show’s creator, Matt Groening.

As Empire reported, Groening made this comment during a The Simpsons panel at Disney fan event D23 2026, which took place this weekend in Anaheim, California. However, Groening’s admittedly vague announcement was immediately put in doubt by current The Simpsons showrunner Matt Selman, who added: “…or not.”

Released in 2003 for GameCube, Playstation 2, Xbox and PC, The Simpsons: Hit & Run continues to be held in high esteem by gamers and fans of the show alike. Essentially a Springfield-set version of Grand Theft Auto, Hit & Run is cherished for its zippy humour, plentiful The Simpsons references and straightforward gameplay.

Reflecting on Hit & Run‘s cult classic status in 2022, NME’s Andy Brown described it as a “brilliant window into the noughties”. Brown also lamented the way the game has been left to languish since its 2003 release, writing: “As it stands, Hit & Run has been left in the rear mirror, gathering dust in the era it represented so well – but does it have to stay there? Go on, suits – let’s take Hit & Run out for another spin.”

Selman previously spoke about a future iteration of the game in 2021, when he said he would love to see a remastered version of Hit & Run. However, he also noted at the time that “it’s a complicated corporate octopus to try to make that happen”.

Two years later, fans were thrilled when the game’s soundtrack finally was released on Spotify and Apple Music.

In March, Selman teased a revival of the franchise, saying: “Nothing is set in stone but my quote about a Hit & Run [revival] would be, ‘Never say never’. Because we know people love it. We know they want it, so that’s good. If we know people want it, never say never.”
