Slayyyter addresses resurfaced racial slurs amid backlash

“How many times do I have to say that I'm not that kind of person anymore?” The post Slayyyter addresses resurfaced racial slurs amid backlash appeared first on NME.

Slayyyter has addressed backlash after past comments of hers containing racial slurs resurfaced.

The posts first came to light back in 2020 and in January that year Slayyyter, real name Catherine Garner, apologised for the language used in the updates. She also said that she took “full accountability” for them. At the time, she said that she wrote the posts when she was 15-years-old and “knew those words were slurs” and “knew it was offensive”.

“But out of pure immaturity, I used it anyway,” she wrote in the 2020 open letter with fans. “I wish so badly I could beat … my 15-year-old self for behaving so inappropriately, but I can’t.”

She also added that she is “not racist” and “made mistakes during my adolescent years, but I have made active strides to do better since then”, and also vowed to donate a portion of the money from her vinyl and CD sales to charities supporting the Black LGBTQ+ community.

Now, those past comments have come to light once again, and the singer has addressed those people trying to “re-cancel” her about it.

According to USA Today, the past tweets emerged again after they were shared on a Camila Cabello fan page on Twitter, and an Instagram user with the handle @andrewramdat.reels claimed that Slayyyter addressed the post on her private Twitter/X account.

“Everyone is trying to re-cancel me over things and behaviours from my high school days,” she allegedly wrote. “How many times do I have to say that I’m not that kind of person anymore and that I haven’t been like that for over 15 years?”

She later added: “This newfound attention is cool and all, but it’s unsettling about having people try to find things to ruin me with. Why do you want to see me fail so bad?”

The response has divided fans online, with some arguing that she has not fully taken accountability for the past comments, while others have defended her as already apologising and showing regret.

“She did not take accountability. She just made excuses that we’ve heard before: ‘I was young,’ ‘I’ll donate to Black organisations.’ Literally, just apologise other than saying you were in high school or a kid,” one person commented on the Instagram post, while someone else agreed: “She’s allowed to change, but I’m so over people chalking up racism to high school behaviour”.

Others, however were more sympathetic, with one writing: “She’s genuinely evolved as a person and addressed this so many times, and even before they surfaced the first time”, and someone else adding “If we don’t allow anyone to grow and get better, then there is no hope for our future”.

The US pop artist has been out on the road in Europe this month in support of her third studio album, ‘Wor$t Girl In America’, which was released in March. Last week she cancelled the remaining dates of her 2026 UK and European tour due to illness.

“Hey guys. I am heartbroken to share after multiple doctor visits I have laryngitis and vocal cord tears and have been ordered to go on medication and full vocal rest for at least two weeks,” Slayyyter wrote. “Because of this, I am forced to cancel the remaining UK/EU dates to avoid permanent damage to my voice. Full refunds will be available at point of sale.”

The singer-songwriter went on to confirm that she and her team were currently looking at rescheduling the impacted dates for next year, adding: “I hope to have news to share very soon to make it up to you.”
