Pixies have shared four unearthed tracks, all written as the band were working on ‘Bossanova’ and ‘Trompe le Monde’.

The four tracks date back to the period between 1987 and 1991, and have been released on all digital streaming platforms for the first time. They were first made available as two bonus 7” singles in the limited-edition remastered pressings of ‘Bossanova’ and ‘Trompe le Monde’.

Songs include the Steve Albini version of ‘Dig For Fire’, which was recorded in late 1987 during the sessions for ‘Surfer Rosa’. It was ultimately changed and released on ‘Bossanova’ nearly three years later.

Also featured is ‘Punk Loop’ which was recorded in 1991 during the ‘Trompe le Monde’ sessions, labelled as ‘Punk Loop’ MSTR and remained as an unreleased jam, and ‘Brackish Boy’, the song that was originally written with Pixies but ultimately rerecorded by Black Francis and released on his eponymous 1993 debut solo album. This early version has been mastered from the original album session tape, and released with no post-production.

Finally, the fourth unearthed song is ‘Go Man Go’, a track co-written by Black Francis and Kim Deal during the recording sessions for Pixies’ ‘Bossanova’ and The Breeders’ ‘Last Splash’. It failed to make the final tracklist for either record, but was played a handful of times live by The Breeders in the following years.

‘Go Man Go’ resurfaced in 2023 when The Breeders included it in their 30th anniversary reissue of ‘Last Splash’.

Pixies have been celebrating their 40th anniversary throughout this year and headed out on a UK and European tour over the summer to mark the milestone. Speaking to NME at Mad Cool Festival earlier this year, guitarist Joey Santiago confirmed that the group were continuing to work on new music.

“We’re always in the works. Same formula,” he said. “We have a break coming up in October and we’re gonna get together and piece more songs together.”

Their most recent studio album was 2024’s ‘The Night The Zombies Came’, their first with bassist Emma Richardson. In 2027 they are set to hit the road with Queens Of The Stone Age across the US.
