The creators of South Park have issued an apology for the extensive delay of their upcoming movie with Kendrick Lamar – telling fans that they “still believe in the project”.

In early 2022, it was revealed that Kendrick Lamar would be producing a live-action comedy film in collaboration with the creators of South Park, Matt Stone and Trey Parker. The following year, it was confirmed that besides producing, Parker would also direct the live-action movie.
Virtually no information about the film has been shared since then, although it has been confirmed that Dave Free of Lamar’s label PgLang will co-produce, and that the plot reportedly revolves around the past and present coming to a head when a young Black man who is interning as a slave re-enactor at a living history museum discovers that his white girlfriend’s ancestors once owned his family.
Updates about the film stayed quiet until 2025, when it was later revealed that the project had been pushed back until 2026 – suspected at the time to pick up again this past March.
A reason for the delay was not revealed, although it may have been done as Lamar was busy on tour with SZA across the summer.

Last November, creators of South Park confirmed that the live-action comedy film had been delayed again, and would not be picking up in spring 2026 as once thought.
“It’s true – we’re moving (again),” read a statement attributed to Stone and Parker’s production banner Park County and Lamar’s company PGLang. “We’re working hard at finishing the movie.”
Now, with no word of the film since then, Parker and Stone have spoken about the progress and apologised to fans for the delays.
“We take full responsibility for the schedule delay of this movie,” they told The Ankler. “We apologise to our partners at pgLang and Paramount, and we appreciate their patience. South Park and life’s circumstances have gotten in the way, but we still believe in the project.”
At the moment, the film is said to be working under the title ‘Whitney Springs’ and in production at Paramount.

The Ankler also shares that there may be a change to the film’s premise too, claiming that the plot now follows a Black slave reenactor as he butts heads with the racist mayor of a Midwestern town.
Lamar is also reported to have recorded several new songs especially for the movie.
Last year, Andrew Schulz made headlines when he called Kendrick Lamar a “hypocrite” for working with South Park creators on the project.
Tension between the two began back when Schulz was criticised for joking about white men in relationships with Black women, and alluding that Black women are abusive on the Flagrant podcast. He would later say that the rapper’s choice to work with South Park creators Matt Stone and Trey Parker was “hypocritical” given the show’s prior jokes about Black women.
Season 29 of South Park is set to launch on September 16, and likely to continue the show’s trend of making Donald Trump the major antagonist, which they have been doing over the past two seasons.
The series, which airs on Paramount+ in the UK, has aimed most of its jokes in recent seasons at the US President with storylines depicting him in a relationship with Satan, having a micro penis, and having sex with Vice President J.D. Vance.
The creators of South Park said they initially intended to stop mocking Trump after one episode, but kept going after the pushback they received.
Last July, The White House hit back at the animated series, saying in a statement at the time: “This show hasn’t been relevant for over 20 years”. According to Trey Parker and Matt Stone, it was this reaction that inspired them to continue.
More recently, after recently winning the Emmy for Outstanding Animated Program, Parker and Stone posted a graphic with Trump clutching an Emmy trophy with his pants and underwear around his ankles with the message: “You finally got your Emmy.”
The post appeared to mock the US President’s own track record on Emmy victories after he was previously nominated for the US version of The Apprentice for Outstanding Reality-Competition Program in 2004 and 2005, but failed to win.
Since then, the creators have mocked Donald Trump yet again – changing the name of the animated show to South America.
