Paul Nowak says the donations to Reform UK suggest that Nigel Farage is a ‘politician for sale’
Downing Street has said that the plans to tighten the rules on donating to political parties set out in the representation of the people bill, which has cleared the Commons and starts its passage through the Lords this afternoon, are not “the limit of our ambition for reform”.
Speaking at the No 10 lobby briefing, the PM’s spokesperson said:
[We] will continue bringing forward further reforms to strengthen confidence in our democracy.
Following on from the previous minister for democracy’s letter to you of 10 July 2026, we wanted to reiterate the government’s concerns, shared by many members of the public and parliamentarians, about the rise in the volume and concentration of money in UK politics. We have to limit the way financial power can end up dominating political power, to get to a politics that works for all people in all places.
We believe spending limits on parties and candidates are too high, and ought to be reduced.
The prime minister is committed to delivering change across all four nations of the United Kingdom and believes strongly in the union.
The United Kingdom is at its best when people come together around our shared values and problem-solving, rather than division, and the prime minister will continue to ease pressures on household finances, and delivering greater economic security, rather than engaging in constitutional debates or further referendums.
