Townies share new song ‘Wednesday’ in response to Wednesday’s ‘Townies’

The Los Angeles emo band promised to deliver the track as soon as Wednesday's 'Bleeds' album was released last year The post Townies share new song ‘Wednesday’ in response to Wednesday’s ‘Townies’ appeared first on NME.

Townies have responded to Wednesday‘s song ‘Townies’ by releasing a track of their own named ‘Wednesday’ – check it out below.

The Boston-formed, Los Angeles-based band – made up of Tom Lynch, Chris Magnani and Nolan Melia – released the single last Wednesday (August 12) through Brain Synthesizer.

They first signalled their intention to reciprocate Wednesday’s track around the time of the release of the ‘Bleeds’ album last September, on which ‘Townies’ appears. “Wait til they hear Wednesday by Townies,” they wrote at the time.

The track is an angsty, pent-up emo track with chunky guitar riffs and a melodic through line that builds to a fuzzy, frenetic payoff.

Check out the video for ‘Wednesday”, directed by Zach Miller, here:

Wednesday’s ‘Townies’, which appeared on NME‘s list of the best songs of 2025, was written by frontwoman Karly Hartzman about a friend who was subjected to sexual rumours and humiliation when they were teenagers.

Speaking to NME about the track last year, Hartzman said: “She wasn’t holding on to the anger at those people, but you know how sometimes you’re more defensive of your friend than yourself?”

“I feel like it was just nice to tell someone that someone loves you, ‘I feel this deeply about something that happened in high school’, and I think that dynamic is really interesting. It was a fascinating thing to think about how people interpret women being ‘promiscuous’.”

‘Bleeds’ also scored a five-star review from NME, noting: “When Lenderman peels off instant-fix guitar leads on ‘Candy Breath’ and ‘Townies’, meanwhile, Wednesday’s ability to retool debilitating lows into explosive highs becomes something euphoric.”

Last month, Hartzman also joined Hayley Williams at the Newport Folk Festival to perform ‘Mirtazapine’. She has also contributed to Weezer’s recent single ‘Skinny Dipper’, which will be on their upcoming record ‘The Gold Album’.
